Government announces Home Renovation Tax Credit

On January 27, 2009 the Government of Canada announced the Home Renovation Tax Credit (HRTC). The HRTC applies to eligible home renovation expenditures for work performed, or goods acquired, after January 27, 2009 and before February 1, 2010. The 15% credit may be claimed on the portion of eligible expenditures between $1,000 and $10,000, meaning that the maximum tax credit that can be received is $1,350.

Examples of eligible and ineligible expenses:

  • Renovating a kitchen, bathroom or basement
  • New carpet or hardwood floors
  • Building an addition, deck, fence
  • Purchasing a new furnace
  • A new driveway
  • Painting of interior or exterior of a house
  • Furniture, appliances, and audio and visual electronics
  • Curtains and draperies
  • Purchasing of tools
  • Cleaning carpets
  • House cleaning
